3 August 1943, On the once peaceful shores of Pemaquid Maine a task force of Nazi forces quietly infiltrated and established a fire base in the forest. Their mission, to operate a remote listening post and help covert German forces establish a safe corridor across the Atlantic for a possible Axis invasion of North America.
U.S. Army Intelligence believed that the intended target was Canada, but with poor Intel the Germans landed onto the quiet shores of Maine's coast. Their confidence was not wavered however, the relative remoteness and solitude of the Pemaquid area provided the Nazi's with little in the way of resistance and they managed to infiltrate into the forests without drawing too much attention.
Unknown to the German invaders however, their hidden fire base was dicovered by a U.S. Army journalist Lt. Jimmy Halloran, who was on leave after spending two years in Italy and North Africa. It was Lt. Halloran who reported what he saw while hiking in the area to Washington D.C. and within 24 hours a plan to retake the shores of Maine was developed. A small force of commandos sent in to disrupt enemy operations while a larger force attacks from the flanks to destroy the German fire base and stop the Nazi threat.
Halloran, with a little help from his contacts in Washington was permitted to accompany the U.S. Commandos once they were ashore. His role was minimal being a journalist and photographer, but the images captured speak volumes for the courage of our fighting men overseas and for the experience that is war.
